With rumors flying that Resident Evil 9 is on the verge of being revealed, Capcom has confirmed that the next entry in the storied survival horror franchise is now in development. This exciting news was confirmed during the Capcom Next Summer 2024 stream.

Development will be led by Resident Evil 7: Biohazard director Koshi Nakanishi. During the stream, Nakanishi discussed the mobile release of the previous game and took the opportunity to confirm the new sequel. “It was really difficult to figure out what to do after Resident Evil 7,” Nakanishi said. “But I found it, and to be honest, it feels substantial. I can’t share any details just yet, but I hope you’re excited for the day I can.”

Nakanishi has a long history with Resident Evil. Besides directing Resident Evil 7, which revitalized the series in 2017, he also directed Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D for the Nintendo 3DS and the first Resident Evil Revelations game. Additionally, Nakanishi served as a designer on Resident Evil 5.

Rumors of a potential Resident Evil 9 reveal have swirled through much of 2024, though Capcom has thus far kept it under wraps. In May, IGN corroborated reports of Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica remakes. Recent releases include the Resident Evil 4 Remake and Resident Evil Village, both of which were Game of the Year contenders in their respective years.

In addition to confirming the development of a new Resident Evil, Capcom also provided details on a new Kunitsu-Gami demo and the release date for Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster during its summer showcase.
